Mounjaro Safety Update
We are aware of increasing numbers of patients using Mounjaro to support weight loss from private providers.
Whilst losing weight can have many benefits for health, there are also some important interactions which can take place with other medications which we need to be aware of.
This is particularly relevant for oral contraception and HRT. Evidence suggests that medications such as Mounjaro can affect the absorption of oral hormones.
Contraception:
If you are using oral contraception, then please be aware of the advice to use additional protection such as condoms for four weeks after the initiation of Mounjaro and after each dose change.
HRT:
If any component of your HRT is oral, then Mounjaro may affect its absorption. This is particularly important for the progesterone component which is used to protect the lining of your womb and therefore reduce your risk of endometrial cancer.
If you are on oral HRT then your Mounjaro provider should have discussed your options with you – these could include using an increased dose of progesterone or using an alternative form such as a patch. It is very important to ensure you seek medical advice if you have any unexpected bleeding.
